Le Mont Saint Michel

Ahh... the mysterious, the beautiful, the majestic Le Mont Saint Michel. When I first camed to France I kept hearing about this place. Apparently it's a 'must see' and I stand for it. I was beyond excited when I was told it would be the last stop on this epic our trip around the Normandy region of France. It is the third most visited site in France, after the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, with 3 million visitors annually.
SO WHAT IS IT AND WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
Mont means mountain in French and having an elevation of 80 metres, yes, it's sort of a mountain! It's also an island, a city, a castle, a church (monastery), a UNESCO world heritage site, a marvel of nature (with its high/low tides)... How can one place be so many things? Well, that is the wonder and magic of Le Mont Saint Michel!
A rough translation of the name is Saint Michael's mountain, and the name comes from the monastery that was built there in the eighth century. Prior to that, the island was named Mont Tombe. It has gone through a lot of changes throughout the centuries due to the various wars and today it has a population of only approximately 50 inhabitants (which is decreasing year by year)...
Le Mont Saint Michel is a marvel of nature that is best experienced when there is a high tide. Every amazing photo I'd ever seen of this place was taken during high tide when it is 'transformed' into an island. By some really weird stroke of luck, the day and time that we were going to be there was going to be an optimum time for viewing the high tide! I can't even begin to express how fortunate I felt and how overjoyed I was because there is only one high tide during the day and one during the evening.
Because the Mont is surrounded by flat fields and marshes, it can be seen from quite a distance. We were about 6km away and I could already see it. It didn't seem real, it felt like a mirage in the desert. Was that really it? I was so excited that I wanted to stop cycling and take some pictures even though we were so far away. From what I heard, read and saw it is extremely crowded turists on the island. For that reason I was glad to also admire the Mont from afar.
Achh ... tajemný, krásný, majestátní Le Mont Saint Michel. Když jsem poprvé přijela do Francie, slyšela jsem tolikrát o tomto místě. Zřejmě je to jedna z "must see památek" a já si i za tím stojím. Byla jsem nadšená, když mi bylo řečeno, že to bude poslední zastávka na našem velkolepém výletu po francouzském regionu Normandie. Je to třetí nejnavštěvovanější místo ve Francii, hned po Eiffelově věži a Louvru, s 3 miliony návštěvníků ročně.
NO TAK CO JE TO A ODKUD JE TAKOVÉ JMÉNO?
Mont znamená hora ve francouzštině a má nadmořskou výšku 80 metrů, ano, je to jakási hora! Je to také ostrov, město, hrad, kostel (klášter), místo světového dědictví UNESCO, zázrak přírody (s vysokými / nízkými přílivy) ... Tak jak může být na jednom místě tolik věcí? To je zázrak a kouzlo Le Mont Saint Michel!
Hrubý překlad jména je hora Saint Michael a název pochází z kláštera, který tam byl postaven v osmém století. Před tím byl ostrov pojmenován Mont Tombe. Během staletí prošla mnoha změnami kvůli různým válkám a dnes má populaci pouze přibližně 50 obyvatel (což rok od roku klesá)...
Le Mont Saint Michel je zázrak přírody, který je nejlépe vidět, když je příliv. Každá úžasná fotografie tohoto místa, kterou jsem kdy viděla, byla pořízena během přílivu, když se "proměnila" na ostrov. Nějakým opravdu podivným úderem štěstí bude den a čas, kdy tam budeme, optimální čas pro sledování přílivu! Nemohu ani začít vyjadřovat, jaké štěstí jsem měla, a jak jsem měla velkou radost, protože během dne je jen jeden příliv a během večera taky jeden.
Vzhledem k tomu, že Mont je obklopen plochými poli a močály, je ho vidět z velké vzdálenosti. Byli jsme asi 6 km daleko a já už jsem ho viděla. Nezdálo se to skutečné, připadalo mi to jako přelud v poušti. Bylo to opravdu ono? Byla jsem tak nadšená, že jsem chtěla přestat jet na kole a pořídit nějaké fotky, i když jsme byli tak daleko. Podle toho, co jsem slyšela, četla a viděla, je to na ostrově extrémně přelidněné turisty. I z tohoto důvodu jsem byla ráda, že můžu obdivovat Mont i z dálky.
