Road trip around the UK - 8 tips:
There are a lot of wonderful places in the United Kingdom. Whether you are studying or living in Britain, it is also important to go on a road trip from time to time for an extended weekend (or during the holidays) and discover the beauties of the British Isles. Pack up a snack supply, compile a list of songs for the trip and embark on one of these ten amazing adventures:
- Yorkshire Dales, Buttertubs (England) - Winding roads in Yorkshire and endless moors are the perfect opportunity to perfect your driving skills. On the way to the Buttertubs Pass in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, a local farmer's tractor may slow you down, but a challenging climb awaits you, which became famous in 2014 as the first stage of the Tour de France. By the road, you will also see holes up to 20 m deep in the ground, where farmers who used to go to the market used to rest and hid butter in the cold at the bottom so that they would not melt on their way (hence the name Buttertubs). Be sure to also stop at Wensleydale Creamery, where they have the best cheese in the Dales!
- From Burrowdale to Buttermere, Lake District (England) - The UNESCO-listed Lake District is a paradise for all lovers of outdoor adventures. Discovering this beautiful part of England, which stretches for almost 2,500 km2, you will discover charming lakes, steep hills and also the most beautiful sunsets in all of England. We recommend that you go from lake to lake, camp in Buttermere, enjoy kayaking on Ullswater Lake or go hiking on Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain.
- Black Mountain Pass, Brecon Beacons (Wales) - This 20-mile pass runs through the Welsh valleys from Gwaun-cae-Gurwan to Llandovery - over bridges over lush rivers and mountain streams, occasionally narrowing between two stone walls and then rising between moorland to the famous Black Mountain. Here and there you may see a stray sheep, but in any case, before you travel, make sure that you have the brakes in order so that nothing happens to you in this breathtaking mountain pass.
- Abergwesyn Pass, Powys (Wales) - Another really nice road trip in Wales is the 20-mile section connecting Abergwesyn and Tregar, also known as the Devil's Stairs. He didn't get the nickname just like that - a narrow road, a very steep and winding climb through the forest, definitely nothing for the faint of heart. In the end, however, you will be rewarded with beautiful long valleys, where only flocks of sheep will keep you company. (Keep in mind, however, that at the end you will have an equally steep descent.)
- Cheddar Gorge, Somerset (England) - Cheddar Gorge is a limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills near the village of Cheddar in Somerset. It attracts half a million visitors each year who want to see the local caves. Embark on a journey through this gorge with more than 150 m high, almost vertical rock wall above the road, on the ridge of which you can occasionally see a goat. If you want to avoid crowds of tourists, you should leave early in the morning.
- Cotswolds (England) - The Cotswolds are characterized by gentle hills, charming medieval villages with thatched roofs, beautiful castles and imposing houses that make you feel like you are in the Downton Estate series. Visit Combe Castle, Stroud, Blenheim Palace and the village of Bourton-on-the-water. The Cotswolds also hosts a number of festivals and cultural events, so find out what's interesting going on while you're driving around your trip.
- Cornwall, Devon (England) - Cornwall is located in the southwest of Britain and is an ideal area for a road trip. Rocky coasts and sandy beaches, hidden harbors and idyllic teahouses will make your trip more pleasant. There is really no shortage of sea views and it is difficult to advise which route is best to take. But be sure to stop at Lands End, the well-hidden small bay of Cadgwith and the traditional fishing village of Port Isaac. And while you're there, be sure to try Cornish cream tea with a traditional muffin (scone).
- Snowdonia National Park (Wales) - This unconventional route starts in the idyllic town of Betws-y-Coed (type "Pont-y-Pair bridge" into Google) and winds up the impressive Snowdonia National Park to Llanberis. From here you will see the majestic ridge of Mt. Snowdon (1,085 m above sea level). Then head south and drive around the medieval Harlech Castle to Barmouth, where you can enjoy beautiful views of Cardigan Bay.
